Section 14 Ringer Detection Testing
14.1 Ringer Detection Testing
The CableSHARK is capable of performing a ringer detection test to determine the ringer equivalency
number (REN) and capacitiance of T-R, R-G, T-G.
Telephone companies define a "ringer equivalency number" (REN) for each device that rings when your
telephone number is called. This number represents the current each device draws. The maximum number
of REN's per circuit is going to be a number less than 4.0 or 5.0. The exact number is set by the capabilities
of your local telecom supplier. As more devices are connected to the phone line the total REN value
increases. When the total REN value starts to approach the maximum value set by the telecom supplier your
telephones and/or modems may not ring.
14.1.1 Setting up a Ringer Detection Test
To set up a Ringer Detection test, select the Ringer Detection option from the CABLE TESTS pop-up menu.
